School place applications now open for September 2026

Parents and carers can now apply for primary and secondary school places for next September, with deadlines set for 31 October for secondary schools and 15 January for primary schools.

Why it matters: Suffolk County Council processed over 14,700 applications last year, with 94% of families securing their first choice school and 98.4% receiving an offer from one of their top three preferences.

The details: The application window is now open for children starting in the normal year of entry at primary schools (including infant and junior schools) and secondary schools in September 2026. All applications received by the closing dates are processed simultaneously using schools' oversubscription criteria, while late applications are handled after on-time submissions.

What they're saying: Councillor Andrew Reid, Suffolk County Council's Cabinet Member for Education and SEND, said: "Parents and carers need to carefully consider which schools to apply for on behalf of their child. They need to make sure they complete and submit their application by the closing date to give them the best chance of getting a place at one of their preferred schools."

He added: "I would strongly advise that parents and carers think about how their child will travel to school before they apply for a school place. It is important that parents and carers check which is their child's nearest suitable school on our Nearest School Checker because this might not be their catchment area school."

The big picture: Families can list up to three schools on their application and are encouraged to apply for multiple options. The council recommends applying online at www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissions for confirmation of receipt, though paper applications are also accepted.

What's next: Families who move house or expect circumstances to change should still apply on time using their current address. Results will be available on National Offer Day - 2 March 2026 for secondary places and 16 April 2026 for primary places.

The bottom line: With high success rates for on-time applications, parents are being urged to submit their school preferences before the October and January deadlines to secure the best chance of their preferred placement.
