New powers to tackle street drinking and boost town centre safety in Ipswich

Private security officers patrolling Ipswich town centre have been granted new powers to tackle alcohol-related nuisance, as part of ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming environment for shoppers and visitors.

The big picture: Ipswich Borough Council has granted Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) powers to Ipswich Central's Street Security team, operated by My Local Bobby. A PSPO is a legal tool that helps councils tackle specific issues affecting quality of life in their communities.

How it works: The new powers allow security officers to:

  • Request individuals stop drinking if causing a nuisance

  • Confiscate alcohol from problem drinkers

  • Issue fines to those who refuse to comply

Key details: The order does not impose a blanket ban on public drinking in Ipswich. Instead, it targets behaviour that causes problems for others in public spaces.

Councillor John Cook, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport, says the move "strengthens our shared commitment to creating a thriving and secure town."

What they're saying: Suffolk's Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore has given his "full support" to the initiative, saying it will "help improve the visitor experience" in the county town.

Lee Walker, CEO of Ipswich Central, describes it as "a positive step forward" that demonstrates their commitment to "ensuring a safer Ipswich and more vibrant town."

What's next: The new powers come into effect from today, Thursday, 19 December 2024.

Bottom line: In a first for the town, this approach compliments existing policing efforts, creating an additional layer of protection for town centre visitors.
