Driver caught towing trailer more than four times legal weight limit

A driver was stopped in Ipswich last week, towing a 3,500kg trailer despite only being licensed to tow 750kg, highlighting the dangerous risks some motorists take on Suffolk's roads.

Why it matters: The incident represents a serious safety violation that could have resulted in loss of vehicle control, with the driver towing a trailer 4.6 times heavier than their licence permitted.

The details: The driver was among 97 vehicles stopped and escorted back to a check site at the Copdock truck stop during a multi-agency day of action on Wednesday, 3 December.

The operation was intelligence-led and focused on disrupting criminal activity whilst also targeting road safety offences. Officers detected a range of violations, with just 27 of the 97 vehicles leaving the check site clear of any offences.

What they're saying: Sergeant Alex Kelly, of the Roads and Armed Policing Team, said: "We again saw people taking other completely unnecessary risks, such as the car with five people across three rear seats and the person towing a trailer more than four times the weight he was allowed to."

He added: "RAPT officers are out 24/7 to keep our roads safe for everyone, and offenders should remember that although we cannot be everywhere, we can be anywhere."

The bigger picture: The operation involved Suffolk Police working alongside specialist officers from Norfolk, Essex and BCH forces, plus partner agencies including the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, which has authority over vehicle weights and roadworthiness.

A total of 58 Traffic Offence Reports were issued at the check site, including two for overweight vehicles.

The bottom line: The discovery of a driver towing a massively overweight trailer demonstrates the serious safety risks officers continue to find on Suffolk's roads, despite ongoing enforcement operations.
