Why it matters: The charges follow a serious collision that left a woman in her 30s fighting for her life after being struck by a car whose driver fled the scene.

The details: Officers were called at 07:22 on Thursday, 11 December, to reports of a collision on Burrell Road involving a pedestrian and a silver BMW 318i. The driver failed to stop and left the scene.

The woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Following the collision, police located the car believed to have been involved and arrested a man in connection with the incident. He was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Carl Horsnell, of Henniker Road, has been charged with eight offences:

  • Causing serious injury by dangerous driving

  • Driving with excess alcohol

  • Refusing to provide a sample for a class A drug test

  • Aggravated vehicle taking

  • Failing to stop after a road accident

  • Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence

  • Driving without insurance

  • Assault by beating of an emergency worker

Horsnell was remanded in custody and ahead of appearing before Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Saturday, 13 December.

What's next: Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and asking any motorists driving in the area between 07:00 and 07:30 with a dashcam fitted in their vehicle to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.

Anyone with information should contact the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Serious Collision Investigation Unit quoting reference 37/70165/25 via the force website at suffolk.police.uk/tell-us, by email at SCIU@norfolk.police.uk or by calling 101.

The bottom line: A man faces multiple serious charges after a collision that has left a woman critically injured in hospital, with police continuing to seek witnesses who may have information about the incident.
