Historic Columbus ship replica docks in Ipswich tomorrow

The Nao Santa Maria, a stunning replica of Christopher Columbus' 15th century vessel, will be moored at Orwell Quay from tomorrow until Sunday, offering visitors the chance to step aboard a floating museum that recreates the legendary 1492 voyage to the Americas.

Why it matters: This marks a rare opportunity to experience maritime history firsthand, with the ship opening daily from 10:00 to 20:00 throughout its five-day stay.

The details: The replica invites guests to explore its decks and learn about life at sea during the Age of Discovery.

  • The ship features four masts, over 300 square metres of sail, and more than three kilometres of rope, all designed to replicate the original vessel that led to Columbus discovering the Americas.

  • Built by the Nao Victoria Foundation, a Spanish non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving maritime history, the replica was constructed using an innovative blend of fibreglass and wood.

  • Launched in 2018 after 14 months of work by nearly 100 skilled tradespeople, the ship weighs 200 tons, measures 28 metres in length and, like its 15th century namesake, has successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

What they're saying: Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: "We are delighted to welcome the Nao Santa Maria to Ipswich for its five-day stay. This unique vessel offers a fascinating experience for all ages. It promises to be a stunning spectacle on Orwell Quay, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the history of the Santa Maria and Christopher Columbus."

For context: The ship's arrival coincides with Merchant Navy Day tomorrow. The Mayor will also attend the Ipswich Merchant Navy Association Parade and Seafarer's Memorial Service, where he will deliver a speech. The Red Ensign flag is to be flown at Ipswich Town Hall throughout the day in honour of the occasion.

By the numbers: Tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for children aged 5-10, with under-5s free. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children costs £25. An official opening ceremony takes place at 09:30 tomorrow, attended by the Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Stefan Long, Councillor MacDonald and other invited guests.

The bottom line: The Nao Santa Maria offers Ipswich a unique chance to experience 15th-century maritime exploration, bringing living history to the waterfront just in time for Merchant Navy Day celebrations.

Tickets can be purchased online or directly on board. Group and school visits can be arranged by emailing ecampos@fundacionnaovictoria.org.
