Why it matters: The shopping parade is an essential amenity for local residents, some of whom currently face accessibility challenges due to steps and individual access ramps at certain shops.
The details: A planning application has been submitted for a scheme that will extend the existing car park, lay new paving to improve access to the shops, and create a refreshed square in front of the parade. The space will be furnished with high-quality timber seating, and new 10ft to 13ft (three-to-four-metre) trees will be planted in newly created tree pits.

What they're saying: Council leader Councillor Neil MacDonald said: "This work will ensure local residents, who rely on this shopping parade, benefit from improved accessibility, more parking and a greener, more attractive area to visit. The simple, attractive design delivers a better environment and is built to last."
Ipswich MP Jack Abbott added: "I'm really pleased we are using government investment to improve everyday spaces in our communities, and these plans for Hawthorn Drive Shopping Parade will make a positive difference for the people who rely on it. The improvements will create a more accessible and welcoming space, with better paving, additional parking and new trees and seating that will brighten the area for shoppers and local businesses alike."
For context: The project is funded through the Government Local Regeneration Fund, formerly known as the Towns Fund. The fund has since been consolidated into a single flexible funding pot that brings together several previous schemes, giving local authorities greater freedom to move money between projects and make decisions locally without needing prior approval from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Councils have until the end of March 2028 to spend their allocation.
The bottom line: The Hawthorn Drive scheme represents a practical, community-focused use of regeneration funding by improving an everyday local amenity for the residents who depend on it.
