Fire pods and gang awareness workshops grip Ipswich pupils

This year's Crucial Crew featured interactive scenarios on everything from online safety to criminal exploitation, with the smoke-filled Fire Pod proving most popular.

Why it matters: The programme equips 10 and 11-year-olds with crucial safety knowledge as they prepare for secondary school and greater independence.

The details: Now in its 31st year, Crucial Crew has reached over 45,000 young people since 1994, making it one of Ipswich's longest-running youth safety initiatives. In this year's programme, 1,285 Year 6 pupils from 26 local primary schools participated throughout the two-week programme at Inspire Suffolk on Lindbergh Road.

Ipswich Borough Council's Participation Team partnered with key agencies to deliver workshops covering:

  • Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service delivered the ever-popular Fire Pod experience, simulating a smoke-filled room

  • Suffolk Constabulary taught crime prevention and anti-social behaviour awareness. Lighthouse Women's Aid promoted healthy relationships

  • Turning Point raised awareness of substance and alcohol misuse

  • Volunteering Matters highlighted the dangers of criminal exploitation and gangs through role plays and hands-on activities that also covered online safety, peer pressure, grooming, and hate crime

What they're saying: New Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Stefan Long, visited on Monday and praised the programme's impact: "Crucial Crew is a great way to get important messages across to this age group," he said. "It was impressive to see how engaged and expressive all the participants were, and keen to be involved.

"It was thoroughly enjoyable to join them in some of the scenarios and exercises – the smoke room experience was certainly one of the most popular!"

The results: Before and after safety quizzes showed significant improvement in pupils' knowledge and confidence. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing sessions as "eye-opening" and "exciting."

For context: The Rotary Club of Ipswich has supported the programme for over three decades, with volunteers helping ensure smooth operations each year.

The bottom line: Crucial Crew continues to successfully prepare Ipswich pupils for real-world safety challenges through engaging, memorable experiences that boost both knowledge and confidence.
