Why it matters: The incident occurred at the junction of Portman Road and Sir Alf Ramsey Way during rush hour, forcing the closure of a key route through the town for nearly six hours while collision investigation work was carried out.

The details: Police were called by the Ambulance Service at 16:45 on Wednesday, 26 November, to reports of a collision involving a white Ford Transit van and a cyclist.

  • The cyclist, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are described as life-threatening.

  • The van driver was arrested at the scene and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He has since been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.

The investigation: The junction remained closed until around 22:20 on Wednesday night to allow for collision investigation work to be completed and recovery of the van and bicycle.

Officers from the Roads and Armed Policing Team are appealing for witnesses and are particularly keen to trace the drivers of a white Volkswagen Polo and a black Volkswagen Tiguan that were driving in the area at the time.

Any motorists driving in the area around the time of the collision with a dashcam fitted in their vehicle are asked to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.

What's next: Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roads and Armed Policing Team at Police Headquarters in Martlesham, quoting reference 37/67067/25, via the Suffolk Police website at suffolk.police.uk/tell-us, by email at Callum.Amery2@suffolk.police.uk, or by calling 101.

The bottom line: A serious collision has left a cyclist fighting for life and resulted in the arrest of a van driver on suspicion of drink or drug driving, with police now appealing for witnesses who may have crucial information about what happened.
