The St Peter's Street secret: Welcome to The Hidden Garden

Tucked away behind Puzzle Boutique on St Peter's Street, The Hidden Garden might just be the escape you didn't know you needed.

This gorgeous new secret garden, event space, and café is the brainchild of local business owner Karen Stewart, who saw an opportunity to create something truly different for the town centre.

From boutique to garden retreat

Operating as an extension to her beautiful boutique, The Hidden Garden has quickly developed a vibrant life of its own. By day, it functions as a café offering posh toasties, soups, and homemade cakes. By night, it transforms into what Karen describes as a flexible "event space for anything anybody needs".

The garden's design reflects Karen's trademark attention to detail and sensitivity to colour. White arches adorned with cascading flowers complement matching classic country garden furniture, creating what feels like an escape into another world. The Scandinavian-inspired palette keeps things simple and clean, allowing collaborators and external events to add their own twist.

Fashion meets horticulture

The garden's ambitious programming reflects Karen's diverse vision. The space was intentionally laid out with a decked section shaped like a catwalk and has already hosted a successful fashion show featuring local fashionistas. A jazz quartet has also graced the garden, with plans for more live music following the overwhelmingly positive response.

But it's the participatory workshops that set The Hidden Garden apart. Art workshops, macramé sessions, cookery demonstrations, music quizzes, networking events, colour analysis workshops, silversmithing classes, and even full wellness weekends with yoga and nutrition sessions are all part of the programming.

Community collaboration

For Karen, the garden is very much about "collabing with people," particularly other independent businesses. Remembering the support she received when starting her own company, she's passionate about helping those earlier in their trading journey. She invites other businesses to either run their own events on the premises or participate in existing ones – a mutually beneficial arrangement that strengthens the local business community.

"We want to host events that you don't normally see, that are just a bit quirky, a bit different," Karen explains. The space is both dog-friendly and child-friendly, with the aim of becoming "more of a destination" for the community.

The bottom line

Whether you're looking to host a party, enjoy a posh lunch, try a new craft activity, or simply escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, The Hidden Garden offers something genuinely unique to Ipswich's town centre.

In a landscape where many businesses are struggling, Karen has created not just a successful business but a space that actively supports other local enterprises, proving that collaboration and community spirit can flourish in the most unexpected places.
