'Inadequate' Ipswich nursery closes over child safety concerns

An Ipswich nursery caring for over 100 children has been rated 'Inadequate' by Ofsted after inspectors uncovered serious safeguarding failures and poor educational standards.

What's happening: Twizzle Tops Day Nursery on Cavendish Street, which looks after children aged 0-4, closed as its rating plummeted from 'Good' at its previous inspection to the lowest possible grade.

Ofsted has rated the nursery 'Inadequate', with inspectors raising serious safeguarding issues and concerns about children's education and development.

Why it matters: The nursery, which cares for over 100 children aged up to 4, has declined significantly since its previous 'Good' rating.

Parents rely on childcare providers to keep their children safe and support their development. They often use Oftsed ratings to decide where to send their children.

Details:

  • Ofsted found the nursery failed to ensure all staff had proper background checks, potentially putting children at risk.

  • Inspectors said some staff lacked proper training on safeguarding procedures.

  • Support for children with special educational needs was described as "weak."

  • The report noted a "chaotic and disorderly" environment at times.

  • Staff were observed physically intervening with children inappropriately.

What they're saying: The report stated, "Weaknesses in leadership and management undermine children's safety and learning."

Between the lines: The nursery has a 5-star rating on Google Reviews and a 9/10 rating on DayNurseries.co.uk , but frequent staff turnover, including managers, is reported to have contributed to the nursery's decline.

What's next: Ofsted has issued a Welfare Requirements Notice, mandating improvements in staff recruitment, safeguarding training, and behaviour management by July 16. The nursery has since closed.

Have your say: If your child attended the nursery, please email editor@ipswich.co.uk to share your experiences and views.
