How you can help local children wake up to gifts this Christmas

Shoppers at the Buttermarket Centre can donate new toys and food items to ensure no Ipswich family goes without this festive season, with donations accepted until 14 December.

Why it matters: The appeal supports two local charities working to provide Christmas gifts for children who might otherwise receive nothing on Christmas Day, while also stocking food banks during one of the most challenging times of the year for families.

The details: The centre is collecting donations for The Salvation Army Toy Appeal and the BME Suffolk Support Group Food Bank & Toy Drive. Shoppers are asked to donate:

  • New, unwrapped toys suitable for all ages, from infants to teenagers

  • Non-perishable food items

What they're saying: Tyrone Candee, interim facilities manager at the Buttermarket Centre, said: "This year, more than ever, we know families are struggling. We are proud to once again partner with the Salvation Army to ensure that local children wake up to a magical Christmas morning. Donating a new, unwrapped toy is a simple yet incredibly powerful act of kindness that makes a huge difference."

He added: "We are asking the kind people of Ipswich to dig deep and support both of these fantastic charities. Whether it's a small gift or a few tins of food, every single donation will help brighten the holidays for a family in need."

How to donate: Donations can be dropped off at the dedicated collection point on the ground floor, next to the Grape Tree store. The appeal runs until 14 December to allow time for the charities to distribute the items before Christmas.

The bottom line: A simple donation of a toy or food items can help ensure local families experience the joy of Christmas, with the Buttermarket Centre providing an easy way for the community to support those in need.
