Why it matters: One of Ipswich's oldest pubs has returned to service after undergoing extensive improvements, providing modern facilities for customers while preserving the historic charm of the timber-framed building.

The details: Greene King reopened the doors on Friday, 12 September, after a month-long closure for refurbishment works. The pub, thought to date back to the 1600s, has received upgrades throughout, whilst keeping "all the history and charm of the building while adding the modern-day touches that today's pub customers deserve."

Key improvements include:

  • Upgraded furniture and décor throughout the interior

  • New TV screens showing Sky Sports and TNT Sports

  • Completely refurbished toilets with a modern look

  • Enhanced beer garden with outdoor heaters and new furniture for year-round use

  • Extended opening hours from 8am Monday to Saturday and 10am on Sundays

The bigger picture: The pub's location makes it perfect for Ipswich Town supporters, with fans able to "catch the live atmosphere from the nearby Ipswich Town stadium on match days from the comfort of the improved beer garden."

The venue now offers breakfast menus alongside its existing food service, including Sunday roasts and seasonal burgers, as well as real ales, cocktails, and low- and no-alcohol drink options.

What they're saying: General manager Ben Baker said, "This historic pub is the perfect place for friends and families to meet up and make memories. There is something for everyone throughout the week, from prime TV sports to quizzes, and live music and DJ nights, as well as a great range of food and drinks."

He added, "Thanks to the recent works, we can offer the comfort and convenience of modern-day furnishings and fixtures in this wonderful 17th-century pub setting. We invite the local community to come in and make the most of the Cock & Pye's hospitality!"

The bottom line: Greene King's six-figure investment has transformed the historic pub into a modern hospitality venue whilst preserving the character of the 17th-century building.
