Why it matters: The Warm Homes Suffolk initiative could save eligible households hundreds of pounds on energy bills through free installations worth thousands, but the funding must be allocated by the end of March 2026.
The details: Suffolk County Council secured £1.38 million from the government's Warm Homes Local Grant Fund at the end of November 2025. The scheme targets energy inefficient homes where residents are on low incomes, receive certain benefits, or live in specific postcode areas.
Available improvements include:
Wall and loft insulation
Solar panels
Air source heat pumps
To qualify, Suffolk homes must be privately owned (either by the resident or their landlord) and have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D, E, F or G.
Household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less, but residents might still be eligible if either:
They live in certain postcode areas (specific areas of Beccles, Felixstowe, Ipswich, Lowestoft and Stowmarket)
Someone in the household receives certain benefits
They have a severe or long-term health condition which is adversely affected by living in a cold home
Once approved, assessors identify which measures suit the property best. Contractors then install them for free.
What they're saying: One previous recipient, named only as Shirley from Ipswich, had her home improved from an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D to A: "I really noticed the difference with the wall insulation and was immediately warmer. Now I have solar panels, I'm looking forward to my electricity bill being lower. I'm very thankful for the installation."
Councillor Richard Rout said: "Warm Homes Suffolk has made improvements to hundreds of properties, giving people warmer, safer homes and reducing their energy bills. But people must apply soon, as government has only given us a few months to distribute this funding."
For context: In March 2025, Suffolk County Council secured £4.62 million through the Warm Homes Local Grant to be delivered until March 2028. The latest £1.38 million injection must be spent by March next year.
Warm Homes Suffolk is a partnership programme managed by Suffolk County Council and East Suffolk Council, working with Ipswich Borough Council, Mid Suffolk District Council, Babergh District Council and West Suffolk Council.
The bottom line: Eligible Suffolk residents can access free home energy improvements that could significantly reduce their energy bills, but need to apply before the March 2026 deadline.
