- Description: The most important stories from Ipswich this week

**Good afternoon,**

Suffolk’s two-tier system is on its way out. A decision on the county’s future is due by March, with elections in 2028 and the new authority (or authorities) taking over in 2029\. We report what we know, and what could happen next.

Sticking with the county, Suffolk County Council says up to £219m for its roads still won’t close the funding gap, and Suffolk’s police commissioner has said “over my dead body” to a six-force “mega force”, backing a merger with Norfolk instead.

On our high street, the Poundstretcher building on Upper Brook Street has gone on the market for almost £2 million, and Poundland’s Sailmakers store could be at risk as the chain edges towards administration. On Carr Street, Bargain World is opening its first Suffolk store and an "independent supermarket" is moving into the former Betfred unit.

Finally, don’t miss two brilliant weekend reads from Jon: the day a giraffe came to Ipswich by train, and the songwriter whose grave claims two Olympic gold medals that were never his.

I hope you enjoy today's edition and have a great weekend. We'll be back next week.

Suffolk's two-tier system is almost certainly finished, and a single county-wide authority is the likeliest replacement. But the county council's leader is not ready to accept that the choice is limited to the two business cases already sitting on ministers' desks.

Valley Road in Ipswich (Photo: Oliver Rouane-Williams/Ipswich.co.uk)

Suffolk County Council could receive up to £219.4m from the Government over the next four years to maintain its roads, but says the sum still falls short of what's needed to keep the county's highways in a steady state.

Suffolk's police and crime commissioner has thrown his weight behind a merger with Norfolk, warning he would go "over my dead body" to stop Suffolk being swallowed into a larger eastern region alongside Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Poundstretcher (Photo: Oliver Rouane-Williams/Ipswich.co.uk)

One of Ipswich's largest town centre shops is being offered for sale or rent, raising questions about its future. But the former C&A building on Upper Brook Street has a story that stretches far beyond its current occupant, Poundstretcher. From childhood shopping trips to a much-loved rocking horse.

Ipswich's giraffe on display inside Ipswich Museum (Photo: Oliver Rouane-Williams/Ipswich.co.uk)

In 1909, Ipswich Museum acquired a giraffe standing nearly 17 feet tall. There was just one small problem. The railway bridges weren't high enough. What followed was a feat of Edwardian ingenuity, an inspector who wisely refused to become a jockey, and a rather secretive team of glaziers.

****We cover the stories that no one else does**

This week, we exclusively revealed that Ipswich had missed out on the City of Culture shortlist, uncovered a council plan to spend £1.09m on land without public scrutiny, and gave midwives a voice when they called the town’s maternity block “not fit for purpose”.

But we also tell the stories that make this town what it is. This week, that meant the Ipswich-born artist who drew Little Grey Rabbit, and the forgotten racecourse hiding beneath our streets, complete with an elephant. Your membership helps us fund more of the investigations, features, profiles and local history that you won’t find anywhere else.
