Why it matters: The awards, known as the WUSCAs, are based entirely on student reviews across a range of themes including teaching quality, facilities and student life.

The details: The 2026 shortlist was published last week, with the University of Suffolk nominated in seven of the 12 categories: University of the Year, Career Prospects, Lecturers and Teaching Quality, Facilities, Student Support, International and Postgraduate.

For context: The University took home the top prize – University of the Year – at last year's ceremony, alongside wins in the Lecturers and Teaching Quality and Student Support categories. It also picked up silver in Facilities, International and Postgraduate.

What they're saying: Provost Professor Rachel Allen said: "Being shortlisted for seven awards, including the University of the Year, for the 2026 Whatuni Student Choice Awards is a tremendous recognition of the work all of our staff put in to ensure our students have the best experience possible.

"We cannot thank our students enough for their feedback, which has resulted in these award nominations, as well as helping us to shape their education experience to enable them to thrive."

The bigger picture: The shortlisting follows a busy year for the university. As well as opening a new Esports facility and library, work is underway on new Pharmacy facilities, biomedical science labs, updated student social spaces and a new students' union home, all due to be ready in September.

New courses have also been added to the university's offering, including BA (Hons) Esports, BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance and a Master of Pharmacy programme, with further postgraduate additions planned for this autumn, subject to validation.

The bottom line: Seven nominations in a single year is a strong indicator that students rate their experience at the University of Suffolk – recognition that is all the more meaningful given the awards are decided entirely by the people who matter most: the students themselves.
