# Suffolk heritage craftspeople urged to apply for £2,500 grants

**Why it matters:** Suffolk has more than 13,000 listed buildings, but the craft skills needed to sustain them – including pargetting, flintwork and brickmaking – are increasingly at risk, according to the Suffolk Preservation Society.

**The details:** The Suffolk Preservation Society has launched its Endangered Crafts Fund for Suffolk, delivering grants of up to £2,500 to heritage craft practitioners across the county.

- Grants are ringfenced to Suffolk and delivered in partnership with Heritage Crafts.
- Funding could support new equipment, additional training, or technology to enable better business practice.

**The bigger picture:** The Red List of Endangered Crafts identifies 165 traditional crafts at risk of extinction, and three of Suffolk's key building skills – flint-knapping, pargetting and brickmaking – feature on it.

The society says these crafts are not endangered because they are not needed, but because of an ageing workforce, a lack of training opportunities, and an uncertain economic climate.

**What they're saying:** The Suffolk Preservation Society said: "We are addressing this urgent problem. Through partnering with Heritage Crafts, we are delivering grants of up to £2,500 to endangered crafts practitioners in Suffolk."

**What's next:** Grant-funded projects typically last between six and twelve months. Alongside the funding, successful applicants will be supported by Suffolk Preservation Society staff to develop their ideas and identify targets, with the society and Heritage Crafts monitoring progress and offering ongoing support.

**For context:** The Suffolk Preservation Society is an independent heritage charity founded in 1929, and is the only countywide amenity society dedicated to protecting Suffolk's historic and landscape qualities. It also represents CPRE, The Countryside Charity, in Suffolk. As an independent charity, it receives no statutory funding and relies on its members and donations.

**The bottom line:** With Suffolk's ageing craft workforce putting the skills behind its historic buildings at risk, the Suffolk Preservation Society is hoping its new grants scheme will help practitioners build long-term financial sustainability – but time is limited, with applications closing on 16 October.
