Suffolk enters national esports arena with new university team
The county's first university esports team has been unveiled, with the Suffolk Mariners set to compete against universities across the UK.

The big picture: Suffolk Mariners is the official University of Suffolk esports team, managed by students on the new Esports course launching this September. Students from any university course can sign up as players for the team.
The details: The team will participate in University Esports UK and Ireland, and National Student Esports British University Esports Championship. Popular competitive titles include League of Legends, Valorant, Counter-Strike 2, and Marvel Rivals.
The team's identity reflects the university's Ipswich Waterfront location, honouring Suffolk's maritime history while taking inspiration from US-style sports brands. It features Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, and his trident – symbols of strength, commitment and leadership.
What they're saying: Course Leader Charlie Smith said: "It is a privilege to unveil the new Suffolk Mariners team, which our students will be managing and competing with in tournaments across the country. We're also keen to develop new gaming talent in the county through the team, so we are urging people across Suffolk to back the Mariners and give our students all the support they can as our new team makes its debut later this year."
What's next: The team will host events at the university's new £1.65 million esports suite, featuring more than 40 gaming-spec PCs, a professional broadcasting gallery and a live studio. The facility opens ahead of the September course launch.
For context: Full-time home-fee paying students joining the course in September 2025 can benefit from an Esports Award bursary worth £1,000. Course representatives will be available at the university's open day on Saturday, 5 July.
