New Wolsey Theatre's free Big Afternoon returns in May
Ipswich's New Wolsey Theatre will throw open its doors for a free afternoon of live music, cosplay, fire performance, arts and crafts, and more on Saturday, 30 May 2026.
Why it matters: The Big Afternoon is one of Ipswich's most popular free community events, offering families access to arts and culture without cost.
The details: Running from 14:00-16:00, this year's event is themed around 'joy' and includes live music and DJing, roaming cosplay characters, a fire performance from New Wolsey Theatre associate artist Josh Overton, T-shirt printing, face painting, carnival games, and arts and crafts activities.
What's new: Associate artist Amy Wragg , director of SoapBox Spoken Word CIC, is creating a spoken word piece celebrating Ipswich, which will be installed in the theatre auditorium. She is currently collecting ideas from local people about their perfect day in Ipswich, from favourite places and memories to the sounds and sights of the town.
What they're saying: Chloe Davis, New Wolsey Theatre's creative communities producer, said: "Each year, our Big Afternoon brings together the local community to experience a free afternoon of arts and culture, because access to arts and culture should never be a privilege – it's something everyone deserves.
"This year, at a time when the world around us can feel quite overwhelming and dark, we are creating a special afternoon of joy for all – with a packed programme of family friendly fun, creative activities, live music and performances."
The bottom line: The Big Afternoon is free and open to all ages, but the theatre asks attendees to book a ticket in advance so it can plan for numbers.
