New Ipswich town centre Post Office branch sought after closure

The main Post Office branch in Ipswich town centre is set to close on 9 June following the resignation of its postmaster, but the Post Office says it is looking to restore a service in the area as soon as possible.

Why it matters: The branch, located on the first floor of TG Jones in Westgate Street, serves as the town's main Post Office. Its closure leaves residents reliant on smaller branches in Fore Street and Carr Street until a replacement is found.

The details: A notice displayed on the window of TG Jones states: "We are looking to restore a post office service in this area, as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Customers may use any convenient post office branch."

The branch will close at 17:30 on Tuesday, 9 June.

What they're saying: Ipswich MP Jack Abbott said he has met with the Post Office and that it "remains committed to retaining a main Post Office branch for Ipswich." He added that there has been "good interest in hosting a new replacement branch" and that he hopes "there will be positive news soon."

For context: TG Jones, formerly WHSmith, rebranded in the latter months of 2025. There were fears the store would close permanently when the rebrand was announced.

The bottom line: While the closure will be disruptive, the Post Office says it is actively seeking a replacement location, and Ipswich's MP says he is optimistic that a new branch will be confirmed soon.
