New Asian Supermarket opens in former Argos building on Carr Street

A new Asian supermarket has opened in Ipswich town centre, taking over the former Argos unit on Carr Street. Ipswich mayor Elango K. Evalanka officially opened the store on Saturday.

Why it matters: The opening brings a vacant town centre unit back into use following Argos's closure in 2019 when it relocated to Sainsbury's on Upper Brook Street.

The details:

  • The new store, called New Asian Supermarket, moved into the premises after renovation work was carried out last month.
  • It sits opposite the Ipswich Bazaar, which opened in July in the former Poundland site.
  • The store is also near the existing Asian and Afro supermarket on Carr Street.

Looking ahead: The building sits opposite the site of the former Co-op department store, where a new school is set to be built.

Bottom line: The opening marks another change in the retail landscape of Carr Street, bringing a previously empty unit back into use while adding to the area's world food options.
