Olivia and Muhammad topped the UK charts with 2,761 and 5,721 babies respectively, but what were the most popular baby names in Ipswich last year?

The local winners: Amelia and Emily tied for most popular among Ipswich girls in 2024, with 17 babies each receiving these names. They replaced Isabella, which ranked first with nine babies the previous year.

For boys, Oscar won top spot, with 18 babies taking on the popular name last year. This differed from 2023, when Noah and Theodore both ranked first, with Noah given to 10 baby boys.

The national trends: Olivia has been the most favoured baby girl name across England and Wales since 2016 and has remained in the top three every year since 2006.

Muhammad's rise to the top represents only its second year leading the boys' chart, though it has been in the top 10 since 2016. Three variations of 'Muhammad' made the national top 100: Mohammed came 21st with 1,760 boys, while Mohammad ranked 53rd with 986.

Royal decline: Traditional royal names continued their downward slide. George ranked sixth nationally with 3,257 babies, followed by William at 27th and Louis at 47th. Charlotte ranked 23rd for girls.

The unusual choices: Parents choosing more unique names included those who opted for Cuthbert, Crispin, Awesome and Beckham for boys, and Orchid, Poem, Sicily and Everest for girls – all given to fewer than five babies nationally.

The details: The rankings were created using exact spellings from birth certificates, meaning similar names with different spellings were counted separately.

The bottom line: Ipswich parents are following broader national trends away from traditional choices, with Amelia, Emily and Oscar replacing Isabella and Noah as the area's most popular baby names.
