Why it matters: Simon Loveridge faces four separate arson charges, including two counts with intent to endanger life, after fires that forced emergency evacuations and caused significant damage to vehicles and nearby buildings.

The details: Police were called by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service after vehicles were set alight in the Gainsborough area late on Thursday, 25 September. The incidents involved:

  • Two vehicles in the car park at Alderwood Academy on Raeburn Road
  • One car at the junction of Landseer Road and Clapgate Lane
  • A transit van on Landseer Road
  • A minibus in the car park at Gainsborough Sports Centre on Brazier's Wood Road

Officers arrested Loveridge, of Frampton Road, on Sunday, 28 September. He has been charged with two counts of arson with intent to endanger life and two further counts of arson.

What's next: Loveridge is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates today, Monday, 29 September.

For context: Two 16-year-old males who were arrested on Friday, 26 September, have been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

The bottom line: The charging of a suspect brings the investigation into the Gainsborough vehicle fires to court, though two teenagers remain under investigation as enquiries continue.
