Ipswich to Cambridge rail line gets new name
The rail line between Ipswich and Cambridge is to be promoted under the name St. Edmund's Line, following a public competition that drew more than 1,000 entries.
Why it matters: The name gives a new identity to an important regional rail corridor, as the newly formed Ipswich to Cambridge Community Rail Partnership (CRP) ramps up efforts to increase passenger numbers and strengthen ties with communities along the route.
The details: The CRP was set up in autumn 2024 and held its first external stakeholder event on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, in Thurston – one of the stations on the line. The event marked the appointment of a CRP officer, the confirmation of a chair, and the formal adoption of the St. Edmund's Line name.
The name was by far the most popular suggestion submitted to the competition, run jointly by Greater Anglia and the CRP earlier this year. It reflects the legacy of Saint Edmund, who was King of the East Angles during his lifetime and was later canonised. His ties to the region are long-established – most notably in the name of Bury St Edmunds – and there have even been attempts to have him adopted as the patron saint of England.
What they're saying: Tracey Harding, chair of the St. Edmund's Line CRP, said: "We were really pleased with the high level of interest and participation in our competition to find a promotional name for the Ipswich to Cambridge line and the attractive locations it serves. The name St. Edmund's Line was by far the most popular and really captures the essence of the area. It will help us strengthen ties with the local community and increase passenger numbers."
Jonathan Denby, head of corporate affairs at Greater Anglia, said: "We're delighted that there was such a popular and appropriate name put forward for the Ipswich to Cambridge Line. The St Edmund's Line title will help us raise the profile of the route and encourage more people to take the train, visit the exciting places along it, and support the local economy. We're sure it will help this key regional rail route to continue to thrive in the years ahead."
Councillor Jen Overett, Mid Suffolk's lead member for sustainable travel and a board member of the new CRP, said: "I was very pleased to be a part of the launch for the new St Edmund's Line CRP today. It was good to meet with councillors, officers, railway staff, and many community representatives all along the line from Ipswich to Cambridge and Soham, and to celebrate this new partnership together as well as share ideas and priorities for its future. Mid Suffolk's administration is proud of its key role in making this venture a reality. It's been a long journey, but community interest and engagement so far is hugely encouraging."
What's next: The CRP will now focus on promoting use of the railway for work, education, leisure, retail and tourism. Planned initiatives include developing promotional materials, supporting local events, and improving station facilities. CRP officer Lesley Rayner is already in contact with community groups and organisations along the line.
The bottom line: After years in the making, the Ipswich to Cambridge line now has a name that reflects its roots – and a partnership in place to put it on the map.
