Former Woodbridge shipyard workers urged to share asbestos information

People who worked at A V Robertson Ltd or Frank Knights (Shipwrights) Ltd in Woodbridge between 1969 and 2001 are being asked to come forward with information about working conditions following a former colleague's death from asbestos-related cancer.

John "Russel" White

Why it matters: The information could help provide answers for the family of John "Russel" White, who died aged 70 in September 2023, just days after being diagnosed with mesothelioma – a cancer of the lung lining associated with asbestos exposure.

The details:

  • Russel worked at A V Robertson Ltd at Lime Kiln Quay from 1969 to 1978
  • He then worked at Frank Knights (Shipwrights) Ltd from 1978 to 2001
  • Both Woodbridge-based companies have since ceased trading
  • His family is working with specialist lawyers to understand more about his working conditions

What they're saying: "Finding the truth about Russel's asbestos exposure meant so much to him. It was his last wish and Tom and I want to do everything to see it honoured," said Sarah White, Russel's widow.

Natalia Rushworth-White, the specialist asbestos-related disease lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing Russel’s family, said: “Understandably, Sarah and Tom are still coming to terms with the loss of a much-loved husband and dad and life without him.

“Sadly, Russel’s story is another example of lives being devastated because of exposure to asbestos, often many years after the initial contact has taken place."

Background:

  • Russel developed a persistent cough in late 2022
  • He was diagnosed with mesothelioma on 7 September 2023
  • He died on 11 September 2023, surrounded by his family
  • He is survived by his wife Sarah, 62, and children Tom, 29, and Lucy, 27

The bottom line: Anyone with information about working conditions at either company during this period is asked to contact Natalia Rushworth-White at Irwin Mitchell by email at natalia.rushworth-white@irwinmitchell.com or by calling 01223 791893.
