Centenary Gala Concert

A special celebration concert featuring one of Britain's most distinguished string quartets performing alongside talented conservatoire students.

Villiers Quartet & Students from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

Event details

Description

This gala concert marks a momentous occasion with the Oxford University quartet-in-residence, the Villiers Quartet, joining forces with students from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

The programme weaves together past and present, opening with Haydn's 'Fifths' quartet. This piece holds special significance as it was performed at ICMS's inaugural concert in 1925 and their 50th and 75th anniversaries.

The evening showcases contemporary classical music with Vivian Fung's eclectic String Quartet No. 1 from 2003, before culminating in Mendelssohn's magnificent Octet for Strings, where the Villiers Quartet will be joined by conservatoire students, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing the next generation of chamber musicians.

The Villiers Quartet, founded in 2011 and known for their dedication and exceptional playing, brings their wealth of experience as Oxford University's quartet-in-residence to this landmark performance.
