County, district and borough authorities had been due to be scrapped and replaced with three unitary councils holding greater powers. Cllr Fisher has tabled a motion for discussion at next week's full council meeting, calling on the borough's Labour administration to seek compensation from the Government and to demand clarity on its future plans. He estimated the council may have spent close to £1m during the process, mostly on wages for new and seconded staff – a sum he said was roughly equivalent to a four per cent increase in council tax. **What they're saying:** "We were so far down the line," Cllr Fisher said. "It's very important that the taxpayer doesn't have to foot the bill for this." He argued the money would have been better spent on the town's upkeep. "Ipswich is in an awful state at the moment; weeds are growing out of everywhere, every single member of public can see that," he said. "I know it's boring, but this is the kind of thing the council should be spending its money on." **For context:** Suffolk County Council leader Cllr Michael Hadwen has said the Government has agreed to meet the full cost of the county's judicial review into the reorganisation plans, and will repay Suffolk's six councils for work undertaken on reorganisation to date, using money originally set aside to establish the new unitary authorities.
