# Council ends subsidy for Ipswich's allotments

**The big picture:** Ipswich Borough Council has approved increases to allotment rents that will gradually eliminate the annual £31,450 subsidy over the next five years.

**Why it matters:** The changes will affect plot holders across 18 fields at 16 sites throughout Ipswich, with the first increase taking effect from October 2024.

**By the numbers:**

- Standard rates will rise from £5.45 to £6.05 per rod from October 2024
- A further increase to £6.66 per rod will follow in April 2026
- Concession rates for pensioners will rise from £5.05 to £5.57, then to £6.13
- The council manages 17,352 rods of allotment land across the borough

**Between the lines:** Plot holders will continue to have options for different sized allotments, with plots available in sizes of 5, 7.5 or 10 rods. A rod is an imperial measurement equal to 16.5 feet or 5.03 metres.

**What's next:** The council has served notice of the changes to existing allotment tenants, and the new rates are now in effect.
