Yet a short walk away, the council's own Corn Exchange has sat behind a boarded-up entrance – further evidence of the gap between the council's words and its actions. **The details:** The Corn Exchange opened on King Street in 1882 and is a Grade II listed, council-owned building. Its King Street entrance serves as the main way into King Street Cinema, and also as a side entrance to the Town Hall. The original glass door has been replaced with a plywood panel fitted with a pull handle, alongside signage directing visitors to use another door. A council report on the changes notes that "any surplus in the ring-fenced Restoration Levy fund could be used in future years to fund other repairs/maintenance or capital projects at the Corn Exchange." The council is also pursuing a bid for Ipswich to become UK City of Culture 2029, and from Monday, 21 September 2026, it will join Ipswich Central's five-day Big Clean campaign – including a "Business Pride Day" urging town centre businesses to take greater responsibility for their own shopfronts. **What they're saying:** Ipswich.co.uk approached Ipswich Borough Council to ask whether it is responsible for maintaining the entrance, what caused the damage, how long the door has been broken, and whether there is a timeline for repair. As of publication, the council has chosen not to respond. **The bottom line:** Less than a week before businesses will be urged to take more pride in their own shopfronts on Business Pride Day, the council's leader has written of a town centre residents can be "proud of" while the boarded-up entrance to one of its own civic buildings remains broken and unaddressed. If the council wants businesses to lead by example, it could start by fixing its own front door.
