Graduates celebrating at the University of Suffolk

Why it matters: The handover marks a milestone for the University, with Dr Helen Pankhurst stepping down after seven years as its founding Chancellor, appointed when the institution gained independence in 2016. The ceremonial role includes presiding over graduation and representing the University in public life.

The big picture: The unveiling will take place during a week-long celebration running from Friday, 17 October 2025 to Wednesday, 22 October 2025, with ceremonies on Ipswich Waterfront from Saturday, and an opening ceremony in Great Yarmouth on Friday.

The details:

  • Ceremonies begin at 14:00 on Friday, 17 October 2025, with University of Suffolk at East Coast College students graduating in Great Yarmouth.

  • Ceremonies continue on Saturday, 18 October 2025, in a purpose-built marquee on the waterfront.

  • Ipswich Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering MBE will receive an honorary doctorate on Monday evening, recognising her international career which includes four World Championship and four Commonwealth Games gold medals.

  • Dr Helen Pankhurst will step down on Wednesday, handing over the robes to Zeb Soanes.

Suffolk-raised Soanes is a journalist, author, actor and broadcaster. He hosts Classic FM's weekday Relaxing Evenings and has campaigned for a statue of Benjamin Britten. He received an honorary degree from the University in 2023.

What they're saying: "Graduation is the highlight of the University's year," said Vice-Chancellor Professor Jenny Higham. "The celebrations will be a memorable occasion for all of our graduating students, their family and friends, and all of the staff here who have supported them on their journey."

The bottom line: More than 4,000 graduates and their families will mark the occasion across the week, with the Chancellor handover adding historic significance to Wednesday's final ceremony. Ceremonies from Ipswich will be live streamed for those unable to attend in person.
