What new Suffolk military drone factory means for jobs, defence and the region

A new drone manufacturing facility in Mildenhall is promising up to 500 jobs, apprenticeships and a testing centre near Ipswich – here is what the investment means for Suffolk.

Why it matters: Ukrainian drone manufacturer Ukrspecsystems has officially opened its new production and research and development (R&D) facility in Mildenhall, Suffolk, backed by what's being described as a £200 million investment in East Anglia. The opening was attended by Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, and General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

The details: The facility is part of a wider expansion by Ukrspecsystems in the region, which is also setting up a testing and training centre in Elmsett, near Ipswich. Together, the two sites are expected to support around 500 jobs, including apprenticeships, and strengthen the UK's capability in unmanned and autonomous systems. Suppliers from across the county are already lined up to contribute to the supply chain.

What they're saying: Luke Pollard MP said: "Ukrspecsystems' new factory is a vote of confidence in UK support and underlines the deepening cooperation between our nations' defence industries. This investment will create up to 500 new jobs in the East of England, drive defence as an engine for growth, and help Ukraine defend itself against Putin's aggression."

Rory Chamberlain, Managing Director at Ukrspecsystems UK, said: "Four years on from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this factory delivers what matters: secure supply, secure resource, and sustained support for Ukraine. By establishing production in the UK, Ukrspecsystems are increasing the resilience of the UK's defence industrial base, and providing a trusted supply chain that ensures that the drones relied upon by the Ukrainian Armed Forces can be built and scaled without interruption."

The bigger picture: The investment was supported by Freeport East, which describes the opening as evidence of the Freeport's role as a gateway for inward investment. The East of England has significant expertise in relevant sectors, including telecommunications, autonomous vehicles and data analytics, which the Freeport says creates strong prospects for growing economic clusters in the region linked to the investment.

Steve Beel , CEO of Freeport East , said: "Working alongside Ukrspecsystems, we are helping to build resilient supply chains, create high-value jobs in East Anglia and strengthen the UK's capability in emerging autonomous technologies. It is a clear example of how freeports can act as gateways for globally significant investment and long-term collaboration."

For context: The collaboration between Freeport East and Ukrspecsystems has received international recognition, having been shortlisted for an award at the fDi Intelligence European Investment Impact Awards 2026, which recognises excellence in cross-border investment and partnership.

The bottom line: With a drone factory now open in Mildenhall and a testing centre coming to Elmsett, Suffolk is becoming an increasingly significant base for defence innovation – bringing hundreds of jobs and a growing supply chain to the region at a critical moment in the Ukraine conflict.
