Weekly parkrun poised to make Christchurch Park comeback

The popular free community running event is finalising arrangements to return to Christchurch Park after months of absence.

Why it matters: Parkrun is a well-loved community event that promotes health and wellbeing whilst showcasing one of Ipswich's finest parks. The event was originally held at Christchurch Park before being moved to Chantry Park, which was then suspended in January when the council asked organisers to give the land time to recover.

The latest: Ipswich Borough Council has announced that the local parkrun team is making progress towards returning the event to Christchurch Park, with organisers now finalising necessary arrangements with their national office.

What they're saying: "Parkrun is a much-loved event that brings people together and supports health and wellbeing whilst at the same time showcasing one of our town's finest parks," said Councillor Lucy Trenchard, Ipswich Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Parks.

"Christchurch Park is a fantastic community space, and we've been ready and waiting to welcome parkrun back. We're pleased to finally see progress from Ipswich parkrun and look forward to its return," she added.

What's next: Ipswich parkrun organisers are currently awaiting confirmation from parkrun HQ and hope to announce a start date shortly once this has been received.

By the numbers: Parkrun UK currently delivers over 780 free, weekly timed 5k and 2k events across the UK, with an average of 140,000 people participating every weekend, supported by around 15,000 volunteers.

The bottom line: The return of this popular event to Christchurch Park will end months of finger pointing between organisers and the council.
