The details: Piotr Krzeslak, 41, of no fixed abode but from the Ipswich area, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Wednesday, 29 October, after being found guilty of stalking at a trial on Friday, 26 October. The jury found him not guilty of making a threat to kill.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Krzeslak was made subject to a five-year restraining order.

What they're saying: Detective Constable Natalie Cole, the investigating officer, said: "Stalking is a serious and distressing crime which can escalate into dangerous and destructive behaviour – I would like to commend the bravery of the victim for coming forward and for her resilience throughout the process."

The victim's personal statement was read out in court, revealing the profound impact of the ordeal. "I have tried to put into words how I have been feeling but I don't know if this even comes close. It's so difficult to even get the emotion across. I struggle to even find the words," she wrote.

"I have put on a brave face, said my part, but I feel that no one will ever truly understand until they have lived through something like this. It's life changing."

She added: "I have done this because I want to make sure that this doesn't happen to anyone else ever again, and this has been my motivation all along."

The bottom line: Police are urging anyone experiencing stalking or harassment to report it. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. If you are not ready to speak to police, support is available from the National Stalking Helpline on 0808 802 0300.
