Upper Brook Street works on track to finish in October

Work to improve Upper Brook Street in the town centre is on track to be completed in early October, Suffolk Highways has confirmed, with no formal complaints received from shopowners since the disruption started last month.

Why it matters: The upgrades are intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians while enhancing traffic flow once finished.

The details: The road has been shut to traffic from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays since 19 August, with works due to finish on Friday, 3 October. The project includes new footway areas, carriageway reconstruction and resurfacing, relocated parking and bus stop clearways, plus drainage works, signage updates, and road marking applications.

Businesses remain open throughout construction.

What they're saying: "Our upgrades to the footpath at Upper Brook Street are progressing well and remain on target to complete by early October, making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle in Ipswich to help increase visitor numbers," a Suffolk Highways spokesperson said.

What to look out for: Drivers are being diverted via Tacket Street, Orwell Place, Upper Orwell Street, St Margaret's Street and St Margaret's Plain.

The bottom line: Normal access will resume when Upper Brook Street reopens on Friday, 3 October. Suffolk Highways has confirmed that there are currently no plans to revisit pedestrianising Upper Brook Street following the completion of the works.
