Why it matters: The arrests represent a significant development in the investigation into an attack that occurred in daylight on a public path in Stowmarket.

The details: The assault took place between 05:45 and 06:00 on Wednesday, 19 November. A woman aged in her 30s was out running along a pathway off Iliffe Way when she was approached by an unknown man, who pulled her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

On Wednesday, 3 December, two people were arrested as part of the investigation:

  • A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and attempted rape

  • A 49-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender

The pair have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where they remain.

For context: On Sunday, 23 November, a 38-year-old man was arrested in connection with the inquiry and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He was released without charge on Tuesday, 25 November, and will face no further police action.

The investigation: The victim has been supported by specialist trained officers and has been assisting detectives with their enquiries. This includes helping to produce an EvoFIT likeness of the suspect. Detectives would like to thank members of the public for their assistance in this investigation to date.
