Suffolk Trading Standards has issued urgent safety guidance for residents putting up Christmas decorations this weekend, with a particular warning about electrical items and novelty decorations containing button batteries.
Why it matters: Faulty electrical decorations can pose serious fire risks, while button batteries in novelty items can be lethal if swallowed by children.
The details:
All electrical decorations should be checked for damage and loose wires before use
Outdoor lights must be connected through a 30mA RCD protected socket
Lights should be switched off and unplugged when leaving the house or going to bed
Decorations should be kept out of children's reach as they don't meet toy safety standards
Special care needed with items containing button batteries
Be smart: When buying new decorations, officials advise only purchasing from reputable retailers and checking for CE or UKCA marks.
What to do: Anyone concerned about product safety should stop using the item immediately and contact Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133.
The bottom line: Taking a few minutes to check decorations before putting them up this weekend could prevent accidents and keep your family safe this festive season.
