Police arrest teenager on suspicion of rape following town centre assault

A 19-year-old man has been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning after a woman in her 20s reported being sexually assaulted near St Lawrence Church at approximately 3:15am on Wednesday, 28 January.

The details: A woman aged in her 20s reported that she was walking along Tavern Street at approximately 3:15am when she was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her in an alleyway off Dial Lane.

A 19-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested this afternoon on suspicion of rape and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

What they're saying: Detective Inspector Ben Rushmere said: "I understand the concern this incident will have caused in the community.

"Residents and visitors to the area will have seen an increased police presence in the area today and this will continue while our officers continue with their enquiries.

"We remain in the early stages of the investigation and would encourage anyone with information to please speak to police directly.

"We would urge members of the public to avoid online speculation, which can damage ongoing investigations."

What's next: Police enquiries continue, and officers are asking anyone with information to come forward.
