'I want everyone to realise how great they are' – Pantomime dame brings message of self-acceptance to Ipswich

Pantomime dame and published author Mama G brings her message of self-acceptance and individuality to Ipswich families in a storytelling session that champions being yourself.

Why it matters: The sold-out event demonstrates strong local demand for inclusive family entertainment in the town that celebrates diversity and helps children feel confident about who they are.

What's happening: Mama G will perform at the New Wolsey Theatre today, Wednesday, 13 August, after the venue stepped in to host her storytelling session. Her original performance at Gainsborough Library was postponed by Suffolk Community Libraries, which are run by Suffolk County Council, pending a "risk assessment" amid negative reactions to similar events across the country.

The professional performer, who has been working in pantomime for 20 years and storytelling for seven, describes herself as a "storytelling pantomime dame" who travels the country, "telling children, and their families, stories about being who you want and loving who you are."

The details: Mama G's career highlights include being a semi-finalist on Britain's Got Talent, performing her storytelling panto "The Magic Bookmark" Off-Broadway, and reading her own picture book for CBeebies Bedtime Stories. She has also performed at major literary events including the Hay Festival, Cheltenham Literature Festival, and Edinburgh Book Festival.

Her book "Oh Yes I Am!" was published in 2024 and is available in bookshops. She studied drama at Rose Bruford Drama School, specialising in American theatre, and spent a year studying at university in Texas.

What she's saying: "I want everyone to realise how great they are! Even if one kid leaves my session feeling better about themselves, I will have done my job. Adults too! Story times are for everyone!"

She explains her motivation for storytelling: "I decided to tell stories about being who you want and loving who you are, because I know from experience that not enough people hear stories where they're the main character!"

What they're saying: Douglas Rintoul, Chief Executive and Artistic Director at the New Wolsey Theatre, said: "At the New Wolsey Theatre, we believe in the power of storytelling to connect people and reflect the richness and diversity of the communities we serve. As a civic space, we are committed to openness and creating a welcoming environment.

"When Mama G approached us about hosting one of her storytelling sessions, it felt like a natural fit. Her joyful celebration of individuality and kindness resonates with our values and with audiences. The fact that the event sold out within a week speaks to how valued her work is by local families — and we're always proud to champion the great tradition of the pantomime dame.

"We're also pleased to have been able, in a small way, to support a freelance artist whose plans were disrupted at short notice."

The bottom line: Local families have embraced Mama G's message of self-acceptance, with the New Wolsey Theatre proving that Ipswich venues will step up to support inclusive entertainment when needed.
