New 420-pupil primary school approved for Henley Gate

A new two-storey primary school has been given the final go-ahead in North Ipswich, as part of the growing Henley Gate Neighbourhood development.

Why it matters: With the Henley Gate Neighbourhood forming part of plans for up to 3,500 new homes on the edge of Ipswich, the school represents a significant step in turning a housing development into a functioning community.

The details: Ipswich Borough Council unanimously approved Suffolk County Council's plans for the new school at a planning meeting earlier today. Outline permission was first granted in January 2020, with today's meeting focusing on finer details around appearance, landscaping, layout and scale.

The two-storey Henley Gate Primary School will have space for 420 pupils, with seven classrooms on the ground floor and nine on the first floor, including provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities. A new 60-place pre-school and playing fields are also proposed alongside the school.

Cllr Carole Jones told councillors the development was starting to feel like a community, with the primary school at the heart of it.

What to look out for: Councillors heard that the plans fall short of around a third of the sports provision originally earmarked for the site, due to changing government requirements on the county council to deliver the school. Officers told members the shortfall could still be brought forward by developers as part of the remaining phases of the overall neighbourhood.

The bottom line: The approval marks a significant milestone for Henley Gate, though questions remain over whether the full sports provision originally promised for the site will ultimately be delivered.
