Nadia Cenci has been named Suffolk County Council's new Cabinet Member for Communities, taking on responsibility for domestic abuse services, libraries, community safety and violence against women and girls programmes.

Why it matters: The appointment places Councillor Cenci at the head of some of Suffolk's most vital community services, including supporting victims of domestic abuse and managing the county's library network.

The details: Councillor Cenci's broad policy portfolio includes arts and heritage, Citizens' Advice, community safety, including domestic abuse, coroner services, customer services and complaints, equality, Gypsy and traveller services, human resources, libraries, PREVENT and violence against women and girls, registrars, safer and stronger communities, and the voluntary sector.

The appointment forms part of wider Cabinet changes announced by Council leader Matthew Hicks, which also see Councillor Richard Rout take on additional responsibilities for environment alongside his existing devolution and local government reform brief.

Two new Deputy Cabinet Member positions have also been created, with Councillor Debbie Richards taking on archaeology and landscape partnerships, and Councillor Joe Mason handling property and county farms.

What they're saying: Council leader Matthew Hicks said: "I am delighted to make these appointments and have every confidence that our cabinet will continue to prioritise the needs of Suffolk residents whilst making the big decisions that come with these roles.

"By refreshing and revising the ways in which we work, we can continue to challenge ourselves and council officers to improve what we do for the benefit of Suffolk."

The bottom line: Councillor Cenci now oversees a portfolio spanning some of Suffolk's most critical community support services, from domestic abuse prevention to library provision, as the council seeks to improve its responsiveness to residents' needs.
