Man sentenced for £100k damage spree across Ipswich shops

Thomas Jeffrey, 35, received a two-month sentence for smashing windows at 16 businesses with a skateboard in the early hours of 1 May. He walks free having served his time on remand.

Why it matters: The extensive vandalism caused nearly £100,000 worth of damage to local businesses and significant disruption to the community.

The details: Jeffrey, of Horseman Court in Martlesham Heath, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Friday 11 July charged with 16 counts of criminal damage – two over £5,000 and 14 under £5,000.

Police were called shortly before 12:40am on 1 May by a member of the public reporting a man smashing shop windows with a skateboard. Officers quickly located and arrested Jeffrey at Majors Corner.

The rampage affected businesses including restaurants, cafes, an opticians, a bank, corner stores, other retailers and a charity shop across seven streets: Princes Street, Tavern Street, Queen Street, Friars Street, Coytes Gardens, Falcon Street and Great Colman Street.

What happened in court: Jeffrey admitted to all 16 counts at a previous hearing and was remanded following the incident. His two-month jail sentence was considered time-served by the court, and he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

He was also found in breach of a Community Behaviour Order from October 2024 and fined £50, with five days' imprisonment in default if unpaid within six months.

What they're saying: PC Katelin Humphrey, the officer in charge, said: "Jeffrey caused an overwhelming amount of damage to multiple premises which has had a significant financial impact on the numerous victims, and caused disruption to many people in the community.

"His actions resulted in nearly £100,000 worth of damage and shows his blatant disregard for the law or for the property of others. It is only right that his level of offending is reflected in his sentence."

The bigger picture: Jeffrey remains subject to a two-year Community Behaviour Order imposed by Ipswich Magistrates' Court in November 2024 for previous criminal damage and threatening behaviour offences.

The bottom line: The sentence will be of little consolation to the businesses affected, who face the financial burden of repairing nearly £100,000 worth of damage. While Jeffrey walks free having served his sentence on remand, the affected businesses are left counting the cost of his destructive spree.
