Man arrested after hit-and-run leaves two women injured in Ipswich

A 43-year-old man has been arrested after a hit-and-run collision in Ipswich left two women injured, with one suffering head injuries and fractures.

The big picture: The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when a grey Vauxhall Astra mounted the pavement near the town centre, striking two pedestrians before leaving the scene.

Why it matters: The collision happened in a busy pedestrian area of Ipswich, outside the Spoon World Buffet & Bar restaurant on St Matthews Street, close to the Civic Drive roundabout.

The details:

  • Police responded to the incident at 16:15 on Saturday 25 January

  • Both women were taken to hospital for treatment

  • One victim sustained head injuries and bone fractures, though these are not considered life-changing

  • The vehicle was later located and seized by police

Latest developments: Officers arrested a man from Ipswich on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of:

  • Causing serious injury by dangerous driving

  • Failing to stop after an accident

  • Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence

  • Driving without insurance

He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

What's next: Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage from motorists who were in the area at the time of the incident.
