Maharani: Forty years and still going strong

For over forty years, Maharani has maintained its crown as one of Ipswich's most beloved Indian restaurants, where multiple generations of the Miah family have preserved tradition while serving exceptional Indian cuisine.

Established in the 1980s, Maharani on Norwich Road is a family-run Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant firmly embedded in the local community. Originally set up and run by Manik Miah, the reins were handed over to his nephew, Sumon Miah, just before 2020.

Family values

In a world where everything is ever-changing, it's refreshing to hear a successful and much-beloved local restaurant champion family values, loyalty, and consistency. When the staff gathered for a photo, they all proudly adjusted their outfits and stood tall. The immense pride they take in their work shone from them in abundance.

Sumon told me, "We are all family members. We have known each other for a very long time." This close-knit atmosphere must create a fantastic workplace environment, reflected in the extraordinary longevity of the staff, all of whom have been with the restaurant for between 10 and 20 years!

A royal reputation

Consistently ranking number one on TripAdvisor for Indian food in Ipswich, this gem of an eatery has found a dedicated customer base that adores what it does. Sumon estimates that 90% of its customers are regulars, with a whole host of repeated bookings from the wider community, including Rotary Club events and the Mayor's charity dinners.

The friendly and welcoming environment they have fostered at the Maharani means that eating here also feels like visiting friends, who are always happy to see you and just happen to be the most amazing chefs.

Favourites and specials

Popular dishes like chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, and Bombay alloo—national favourites in the UK – are among the most ordered on the menu.

The Maharani also has its own "special dish" called Handi Chicken. I'm told it's "similar to chicken bhuna, but more authentic, more flavourful." It's cooked in a small charcoal pot with a lid, with an aromatic and creamy tomato sauce.

History and heritage

A restaurant proud of its history, it was illuminating to discover that 'Maharani' means Queen or empress. The British government awarded Queen Victoria the title 'maharani' in 1876 as a way of asserting authority and cementing closer links between the two countries.

India was under British rule for nearly 200 years, and one of the lasting impacts of this was the embedding of royalist ideals across colonised countries.

The Maharani's commitment to quality food and excellent customer service is another 'nod' to their name. What else would you expect from a restaurant that is literally named 'queen' than the very best food, service, and presentation across everything they do? From back of house to front, this is a place that aims high and delivers.

Looking forward

When asked about his plans for the future, Sumon simply stated, "more of the same." This restaurant has refined a winning recipe in both food and service over many years. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Sumon's only wish was to welcome more people through the doors so they could enjoy the food they were clearly very proud of.

For those who haven't yet experienced Maharani's acclaimed cuisine, there's never been a better time to visit. As part of Ipswich Central's Forknight campaign – a celebration of the town's diverse food scene running from 19-31 May – Maharani is offering one of the standout deals with four courses for just £15.

This limited-time offer provides the perfect opportunity to experience the warmth, hospitality and exceptional food that has kept customers returning to Maharani for generations.

The bottom line

Established in the 1980s and handed down from uncle Manik Miah to nephew Sumon just before 2020, Maharani on Norwich Road stands as a testament to the power of family businesses built on traditional values, exceptional service and authentic cuisine. Whether you're a long-time regular or a first-time visitor taking advantage of the Forknight offer, you'll be treated like royalty – just as the restaurant's name promises.
