A planning application has been submitted by the Jamaica Blue café franchise for external works to the former Grimwades building on Ipswich's Cornhill. The Australian-owned chain plans to invest £300,000 and create 20 new jobs.
Why it matters: If approved, the café would be the first confirmed tenant for the historic building recently acquired by Ipswich Borough Council, bringing new life to a long-empty space in the heart of the town centre.

The details: Jamaica Blue is a casual dining café franchise serving freshly made dishes along with premium coffee from the Jamaican Blue Mountains, currently operating from 20 locations across the UK.
The chain is targeting a summer 2025 opening for what would become its 21st UK outlet.
What they're saying: "I am sure residents will be excited to see things moving so fast for the Grimwades building," said Councillor Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council Leader. "It's great news that they will be able to picture what it could be like once it is occupied."
Michael Johnson, Franchise Development Executive at Jamaica Blue, said: "We are thrilled to be bringing Jamaica Blue's signature offerings to the town of Ipswich. Our commitment to quality, freshness, and innovation remains at our forefront as we continue to expand our presence across the UK."

The bigger picture: While this application is considered by the Local Planning Authority, the council will continue work to appoint a contractor who will start refurbishment by the end of May.
The council has received "a number of enquiries" for the second unit within the former Grimwades building and is "confident of swiftly agreeing terms with a new tenant."
What's next: Both new tenants are expected to take up occupancy later this year following completion of the refurbishment, according to the council.
The café chain has confirmed additional UK openings in Bracknell, Worcester, Watford, Bangor NI, Newbury, and Tunbridge Wells in the coming months.
The bottom line: Just weeks after council acquisition, the former Grimwades building is already showing signs of contributing to Ipswich's town centre revival, with more announcements expected soon.
