Jamaica Blue set to welcome first customers this Friday

Australian coffee chain Jamaica Blue will open the doors to its new Ipswich store this Friday, 4 July, less than two months after construction began on the historic Cornhill building.

Why it matters: The opening marks a significant milestone in bringing the iconic building back to life, with Jamaica Blue becoming the first tenant to occupy the space that has stood empty in Ipswich town centre for over a decade.

The details: Jamaica Blue is a casual dining café franchise serving freshly made dishes and premium coffee from the Jamaican Blue Mountains, currently operating from 20 locations across the UK. The chain has invested £300,000 in the Ipswich location and created 20 new jobs.

The bigger picture: Ipswich Borough Council recently acquired the building using £1.3m of Towns Fund budget, specifically to bring it back into active use. Construction work began in May, focusing on roof and window repairs by local company Bellcorp, with specialist contractors protecting heritage features whilst making the structure suitable for modern use.

What they're saying: "I am sure residents will be excited to see things moving so fast for the Grimwades building," said Councillor Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council Leader. Michael Johnson, Franchise Development Executive at Jamaica Blue, said: "We are thrilled to be bringing Jamaica Blue's signature offerings to the town of Ipswich."

What's next: The council remains in negotiations with a national retailer about the second unit within the former Grimwades building. More to follow on this as we get it.

The bottom line: The opening represents a turning point for the Grimwades building, transforming from a long-vacant landmark into a vibrant part of Ipswich's burgeoning town centre revival.
