Ipswich to turn pink for Ed Sheeran homecoming concerts in July

The town centre will be transformed into a sea of pink and host a three-day Fan Zone at Cornhill, as Ipswich celebrates its global superstar's return home for three concerts at Portman Road.

Why it matters: Ed Sheeran's only UK stadium shows this summer will bring 90,000 fans to Ipswich, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy while giving the county a rare chance to celebrate arguably its most famous export.

The details: Ipswich Central  will lead the town-wide celebration that will see businesses, venues, and residents all playing their part in welcoming the singer home. The celebrations will include:

  • Pink bunting decorating the town centre throughout July

  • Street entertainment and live music showcasing local talent

  • A three-day Cornhill Fan Zone featuring music, merchandise, food and drink stalls during the concert period

  • A walking tour highlighting venues connected to Ed Sheeran, hosted on the All About Ipswich website

What they're saying: Lee Walker , CEO of Ipswich Central, said: "When we heard that global superstar, dedicated Ipswich Town fan and local lad Ed Sheeran was coming home to perform in Ipswich this summer, and bringing 90,000 fans with him, we knew we had to celebrate! As we 'Welcome Home Ed' it's a chance for the whole town to celebrate as the eyes of the world fall on the town."

What's next: Ipswich Central has launched a window dressing competition encouraging businesses to turn their displays pink, inspired by the 'Play' tour colours, the pink heart balloon from Sheeran's Azizam video, and Ipswich Town's pink third kit for the 2024/25 season. Windows will be judged on Friday, 11 July, with the winner receiving £500.

How to get involved: Businesses are urged to host fringe events such as music quizzes, open mic nights, specially named menu items, or offers on pink drinks. Residents are encouraged to share their celebrations on social media using #welcomehomeed during early July.

The bottom line: Walker added: "We are the only town getting this opportunity this summer, Ipswich has a proud history of turning out and turning up to celebrate its successful sons and daughters, so let's seize the opportunity once more as we 'Welcome Home Ed.'"
