Why it matters: Leon Hutchison, of Mulberry Gardens, continued to contact his victim even after she blocked his number, subjecting her to repeated unwanted communication that police described as invasive and distressing.

The details: Hutchison appeared before Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 2 October, where he pleaded guilty to stalking without fear/alarm/distress. He was given a sentence of 18 weeks, suspended for two years, and made subject to a restraining order for two years.

What they're saying: Investigating officer PC Sean Mann said: "Stalking is an invasive and distressing crime that can have a lasting impact on victims' lives. In this case the victim was subjected to repeated and persistent calls and messages she did not want to receive. Despite her blocking his number, Hutchison continued to call her and leave long voicemail messages, as well as sending emails."

The bottom line: Police are urging anyone experiencing stalking or harassment to report it, either by calling 999 in an emergency or contacting the National Stalking Helpline on 0808 8020300 for support and advice. Information is also available below.
