Why it matters: The investment marks the first purchase of new vehicles by Ipswich Buses in almost a decade, and the first new double-deckers since 2009, specifically targeting one of the town's busiest routes.

The details: The four brand-new double-deck buses will serve Route 5 between Ipswich Central and the Hospital, providing improved reliability and passenger comfort on this essential service. The buses will begin entering service in the coming weeks, supporting recent timetable improvements introduced on 31 August.

The bigger picture: The new buses arrive alongside several service enhancements across Ipswich's bus network. Route 5 now operates every 12 minutes Monday to Friday instead of every 15 minutes, with extra journeys and improved connections introduced across the town to provide more convenient and dependable services during busy periods.

What they're saying: Dan Bassett, Managing Director of Ipswich Buses, said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming these new buses to Ipswich. Route 5 is one of our busiest services and provides a vital link to the Hospital. These buses will provide more space, greater comfort, and a more reliable journey for our customers."

Councillor Phil Smart, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, added: "This significant investment in four more double-deckers for the fleet is great news for Ipswich. It reflects our ongoing commitment to improving public transport, reducing emissions, and providing residents and visitors with a great value, efficient, and comfortable travel experience."

The bottom line: The four new buses represent Ipswich Borough Council's first major fleet investment since 2009, aimed at improving capacity and reliability on the town's vital hospital connection.
