Construction work begins on iconic Grimwades building

Workers are on site today to start repairs to the roof and windows of the former Grimwades building, as Ipswich Borough Council moves at pace to bring the iconic building back into use.

Why it matters: The renovation marks a significant milestone in efforts to bring the iconic building back into use following the council's acquisition of the building just a few weeks ago. The renovation will pave the way for cafe franchise Jamaica Blue's confirmed tenancy.

What's happening: Bellcorp, a local Ipswich company, has started construction work focusing on the building's roof and windows. Specialist contractors are being used to protect and enhance the heritage features whilst making the structure suitable for modern use.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: "We're delighted to see the works at the former Grimwades building already beginning, with construction starting on site today. While things are happening at a pace, the work is high quality and sensitive to the historic building."

The bigger picture: The council recently acquired the building specifically to bring it back into active use. A planning application has already been submitted this month, with a decision expected soon.

Liam Bell, Managing Director at Bellcorp, said: "Bellcorp is extremely pleased to be working on this historic, landmark building on behalf of Ipswich Borough Council."

What's next: The planning decision is expected very soon. Much of the work will happen inside and at the rear of the building, meaning not all construction activity will be visible to the public. Offers for a second tenant in the Grimwades building are likely to follow swiftly.

The bottom line: The acquisition and renovation of the Grimwades building signals a turning point for Ipswich town centre, with one tenant already secured, a second to follow, and construction moving at pace to bring the building back into use before the end of the year.
